Why You Can't Stop Eating Chocolate on Valentine's Day

Chocolate is known to be addictive. In fact it binds to the same receptors in your brain that opioids do. This causes people's brains to release dopamine when they eat chocolate. Chocolate is also full of fat and sugar, which makes it especially tasty. Companies take advantage of this and to make their food more tasty and addictive. Many people would do things they would not normally do to get a good bar of chocolate.

Sophomore Olivia Kaiser said that she would trade three emeralds on Minecraft for the world's finest bar of chocolate. Another sophomore, Bella Martin, would tackle someone for the best bar of chocolate.

Considering the amount of love people have for chocolate, it is disturbing that the chocolate supply in the world is slowly disappearing. Due to climate change, the cocoa tree is struggling to flourish. Additionally due to poor farming habits, the plant has sucked stripped nutrients out of the soil.

With the combination of climate change and poor farming habits, the thought of losing the beloved sweet would be detrimental to many people. According to the Washington Post the world is starting to see a reduction in cocoa.

By 2050 it's estimated that the world cocoa supply will start to dwindle rapidly. Climate change is one of the largest contributors to this, not just threatening people but to the coca plant as well.

However, there is a potential solution. Some scientists are considering gene editing to help cocoa plants thrive in regions that are growing warmer and many plants that have had this are thriving.

Sophomore Alexandro Ramirez Nagy said he would “Sucker punch the bellows of my accordion” to eat the best bar of chocolate in the world. So perhaps a step towards climate change and genetic engineering can save the addictive sweet.
