The Season that never got started

Updated: Nov 3, 2021

By Ashley Casilli

When Athens High School closed its doors for the very last time until the fall school year, they took the spring sports season with them.

Seniors never got to play their final season of baseball, or run their final race during track season or hit a home run in their final season of softball. They never got to say goodbye to a coach that stood by them for three years or thank the teammates that had their backs through every win, every loss, and every season.

It is something these athletes will never get back but are forced to come to terms with. The seniors never got the chance to come together and play for one last time as a team. The spring sports season never got its greatly anticipated beginning or it's well deserved ending.

Spring sports are often the part of an athlete’s year that they look forward to the most. It is the time they get to share their most memorable experiences with some of their closest friends. It was an abrupt end to the start of something great.

Some athletes never got to feel like they were a part of a team or a part of something because it was cut short. “We never really got to bond as a team due to only having a few practices to spend together,” says Athens High School freshman on the track team. “We were a “team,” but we were never really bonded with each other because we did not really get a season at all.”

Some of the newer members or rookies to the sport never got the chance to become part of a team and share the experience with everyone else. They missed out on their first spring season while the seniors never got to finish their last.
