First dates are a mix of butterflies and new possibilities. They are meant to be filled with the exciting possibility of a new romance and nerve-racking small talk, but the compatibility of two people is never guaranteed. First dates can leave a lasting impression with the promise of a second date, or leave the date running for the hills.
First dates can create a lasting experience to remember for years to come. Science teacher Laura Tuljak shared her successful first date story. “One of the best dates I ever went on was with a former boyfriend where we did your typical dinner first … but then we went to see a show.
“Going to a play was a really good idea for a first date because this particular play was funny, so there was a lot of audience participation. It was more like a mutual experience we were having.”
However, not every first date experience can be as successful as Tuljak’s. First dates may not always leave a positive first impression. One senior anonymously shared her memorable first date story. “One time on my third date with this guy that I dated for a year, we were trying to find places that were private because we wanted to have our first kiss. It didn't happen because HVZ players kept attacking us.”
She explained that HVZ is a really big game of nerds playing humans versus zombies. “We went to three different places. Every place we went to a bunch of HVZ players would come charging towards us screaming with [Nerf] guns and we would have to run away, so that was fun.”
Sophomore Campbell Hauschild, also shared a memorable first date story. “We decided we were going to go to Homecoming together and this is where it started going downhill. I had started to lose feelings for Gale (name has been changed), I didn’t know how to tell her, and I didn’t want to let her down, but that was a mistake.
“So, we went to Homecoming together with friends, TLDR (too long didn't read) I kind of dance like a stripper, said Hauschild. “I went to the dance. Gale and I did not dance that much and it was kind of awkward between us. I ended up grinding on one of her old friends, and the rest of the night went very badly. It was a very bad mistake on my part. Definitely not one of my better judgements, so that did not go well. Gale and I are on pretty good terms now, but freshman year was rough.”
First dates can be awkward and uncomfortable, but they can also be exciting and the start of something new. “One of the things you do when your dating is getting to know someone, that's the whole point,” Tuljak said. “So I feel like people sometimes don't think of it like that, like as a means to get to know someone. So it's fun to do things that both put you out of your comfort zone because you really get to know each other in an authentic way.”
