SYNA comes to Athens

By Zavier Campsey

SYNA, an abbreviation for synapse, the mind and body’s muscle connection, but also the name of a noteworthy sports performance company that has recently come to Athens, Ohio. The reason Coach Brent Kirk decided to move to Athens from his home turf in Mineral Wells and Wheeling, Coach Brent said, “After meeting Zavier… mentioned that training would be a hit in Athens we decided to give it a shot, and it turned out he was right.”

Currently SYNA trains Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30-9:30 p.m. They hope to expand their hours to five days a week with three to four hours of training each day of the working week.

Even with the current hours, Coach Brent says he is “very flexible and wants to work hand in hand with coaches as much as possible” to manage conflicts with a student’s high-school schedule.

“Coach Brent is an amazing coach for the SYNA Sports Performance program in Athens and works to physically, mentally and strategically improve his members” - David Farmer (AHS Junior)

Currently, SYNA works with athletes from age 12 to the professional level through all of their facilities. Some athletes are skeptics, wondering why they should supplement their school’s training with the SYNA program.

Coach Brent said “SYNA coaches have competed as college athletes… served as strength and conditioning coaches at the college level. We have devoted ourselves to the study of mechanical study of sport and kinesiology and have an understanding of how to achieve athletic performance at the highest level… You aren't just another part of the team with us. You get individual attention… get your own personalized program. You have the opportunity to get outside your bubble at your school and see how committed other athletes are from your area.”

The ways SYNA training differentiates from a traditional lifting plan Coach Brent says, “The way we approach the training process with our athletes is to make them better athletes. We aren’t here to create bodybuilders… We don’t waste time on fancy-looking drills and we don't allow the training to turn into a powerlifting meet".

“We are here to give our athletes an understanding as to why we are using a specific exercise or movement and how it can benefit them… We also gauge the energy level of an athlete that day and make adjustments to their training in the case of a stressed nervous system or sign of an injury.”

“Coach Brent is the type of coach that doesn’t only have high hopes for one person. He has high hopes for everyone he coaches. Coach Brent is a very enjoyable person and a very great person to come across. He teaches us to have the mentality and the confidence of a champion.” - Braylon Bacon (AHS Freshman)

In the years Coach Brent has been working with SYNA, he was able to rattle off an impressive list of successful athletes that came up utilizing their training style. “CJ Goodwin who’s played for Dallas Cowboys since 2014. Spencer Lee, a three-time Pennsylvania highschool state champ for wrestling and two time NCAA champion as a junior. Alyssa Robinson, who got third at the big ten indoor shot put and the fourth all-time shot put throw for Penn State.

“Shai McKenzie, who played for Virginia Tech/Hampton football. Logan Goodnight, Penn State/Morehead State baseball, Abby Turner, a state champion swimmer and many more big names.” This showcases the efficiency of the SYNA training style and why an athlete at any level would look into training with them.
